Photographing Poverty
When you think about poverty what images come to mind? What do you picture poverty looking like?
I identify as a Poverty Photo journalist because I explore issues of poverty. I paint a picture of extreme economic hardship but choose to tell a different story. I am on a mission to explore extreme possibilities.
I bring you inspiring stories of individuals, families and communities which will inspire us all to end extreme poverty-Exploring Extreme Possibilities.
Just curious, do you picture poverty through malnutrition, emaciated bodies, distended bellies, faces covered with flies or unclothed toddlers?
Or do your images of poverty include smiling and happy children?
As I photograph poverty, I believe in exploring extreme possibilities and believing in being honest about the challenges people who are considered poor face. I seek to address the issue of poverty with respect and to portray individuals in ways that show hope and the promise of a positive future. I strongly believe in upholding the dignity of every individual.
The images in my projects communicate the need to look at extreme possibilities. I will be intentional about portraying the individuals through a negative lens as I want to show dignity and hope which live within the poor despite the oppression poverty inflicts upon them.
Families and children living in poverty face many challenges but they also have many riches. The experience of the poor creates POWERFUL images, but the power shouldn’t come from the pain they endure. It should come from exploring extreme possibilities and the dignity each person photographed inherently has and that is what I am exploring.
